Do you want to help promote press freedom and journalism in some of theworld’s most difficult environments with your strategic communication skills?
International Media Support is seeking an experienced Head of Communications based in Copenhagen.
We are looking for someone with sharp strategic communication skills and the ability to set clear communication priorities, cultivate strong internal and external relationships, coordinate the development of content and campaign material, tell stories of our results, and quickly turn around media inquiries to position the organisation in Scandinavia and beyond.
International Media Support supports local media and human rights groups in countries affected by conflict, political transition and authoritarian rule. Set up in 2001, the organisation has since then worked with hundreds of local and international partners to support independent journalism, freedom of expression and the safety of journalists. 
The Communications Unit plays a central role in the work of IMS by coordinating and strengthening the public presence of the organisation in Scandinavia and showcasing to the world the great work of our local media and human rights partners who raise the bar for independent journalism and push for accountability.
The unit employs a small team of media outreach, digital, social media, and events staff that assists IMS and its programmes in their communication efforts. The Head of Communications reports to IMS Senior Management.
Scope of work
As Head of Communications at IMS you will:
  • Implement and continuously develop our communications strategy;
  • Identify new opportunities and creative ways of telling the world about IMS’ work and the impact of our partners to key audiences, including the Scandinavian public, our donors and the international media development community;
  • Identify possible communications and media risks and develop strategies to mitigate them; lead on communications crisis management if and when needed;
  • Oversee work to identify and position key IMS messages, people, and partners and drive campaigns in print, online, broadcast, radio and other media; coordinate the drafting of op-eds and press releases;
  • Oversee the editing, production and deployment of digital and print content, including annual reports and other publications;
  • Manage a team of 3-4 dedicated communication professionals.
  • Provide communication support to organisational fundraising and membership recruitment efforts;
  • Advise colleagues on communication and media handling.
What we are looking for:
  • A degree level education in a relevant field;
  • At least seven years of relevant communications experience as a communications professional in the non-profit or private sector; 
  • The ability to set priorities and strategise effectively to ensure maximum impact of communication efforts;
  • The ability to think creatively and see opportunities where others see challenges and limitations;
  • Excellent English-language writing and editing ability, as well as excellent verbal skills; 
  • Proven skills in the development of communications strategies and plans;
  • Social media and digital platforms expertise;
  • Staff supervision / management experience.

Desirable (but not required) qualifications:
  • In-depth knowledge of issues relevant to IMS’ work, including independent journalism, freedom of expression, press freedom, international development, technology and human rights, and associated topics;
  • Professional level of spoken and written Danish;
  • Solid understanding of the Danish/Scandinavian non-profit sector, public donors and solid network amongst press, civil society and decision makers in Denmark and the Scandinavian region;
  • A network amongst international media actors;
  • Willingness to travel for work;
  • Substantial knowledge of organisational and project management;
  • Diplomatic manner and ability to adapt to a range of cultures and experiences in interacting with programmes, colleagues at all levels, external stakeholders, and the public.

Dates and location  
This is a full-time, open-ended position based in Copenhagen. There is a three-month trial period. Salary will be commensurate with experience and IMS policies. Starting date: As soon as possible.
