DS Smith is in the midst of an exciting transformation period, both internally and externally. Many new talents and leaders are attracted to the organisation throughout Europe including this newly created position as Head of Communication in the Packaging division for Northern Europe.
The position
DS Smith, a world-leading packaging strategist, solutions provider and sustainability evangelist, is a key player in the corrugated packaging market space, worldwide. The company’s fast growth and its quick rise to FTSE100 status accelerates its increased focus on branding as well as external- and internal communication to support the company purpose and the execution of commercial strategies.
Your responsibilities
Based in Copenhagen area, the Head of Communications will drive internal and external communication within the Northern operations of the DS Smith Packaging division. 
Strategy and Leadership
  • Define, develop and lead the rollout of the communications strategy for DS Smith Packaging, Northern Europe, working with the regional teams to deliver campaigns aligned to the global strategy.
  • Lead, manage, and develop the local Communication Managers in the regions.
Media relation excellence
  • Lead external communications related to the Packaging in Northern Europe, provide media relation counsel and advice to the divisional leadership, and work with the global communications team.
  • Build strong relationships with tier one national- and trade media in priority markets for the Packaging division, Northern Europe.
  • Brief divisional executives ahead of media appearances.
  • Anticipate, identify and manage issues and reputation risks for the Packaging division within Northern Europe.
  • Ensure consistency of media messaging across the team.
  • Develop and share media and social media intelligence and insight to inform planning and campaigning activities.
  • Initiate dialogue and build strong relationships to external stakeholders within regional and local, ensuring that DS Smith capitalize on all events, speaker opportunities etc.
News Creation
  • Seek opportunity to deliver on the purpose and story:  “Redefining packaging for a Changing World”.
  • Adopt a proactive approach to storytelling in the media and recognize what is both newsworthy and advances the company’s strategic objectives.
  • Mine the division and region for stories that can create news and drive the agenda.
  • Build a profile and a distinctive voice for the business in the media.
Internal Communications
  • Lead a team of internal Communication Managers to develop and deliver an internal communications strategy for the Packaging division.
  • Collaborate with HR in the Packaging division to support cultural and engagement programmes as well as reward and recognition.
  • Work as part of a central campaigning hub that delivers high quality and impactful campaigns to promote the reputation of packaging in Northern Europe.
  • As the communications leader for the largest division within the company, play a major role in developing and delivering packaging-led campaigns deployed by regional managers.
  • Deliver successful campaign measurement and evaluation that encourages continuous improvement.
The position is a management role with direct reports from several European countries.

  • You are experienced in leading and managing teams working cross functions and cross borders. You can steer and guide people, and easily apply a coaching mindset to unleash any human potential within the organization.
  • You are fluent in English and possess excellent verbal and written communication skills. Mastering other languages is a plus.
  • Most likely, you hold a Master or Bachelor degree in communications, business, marketing, languages or social science, or perhaps something different.
