Role synopsis

The GCR Communication Division was established to proactively inform the public, thought leaders and all other stake holders regarding GCR’s clean-up and remediation efforts along the Gulf Coast. The core functions include national and regional media relations and proactive issues management. Both of these areas are essential to the success of our overall communications strategy and as such, they will report to GCR’s VP, Communications and External Affairs.

The Media Relations Manager reports to the Vice President, Communications and External Affairs and ensures prompt responses to media inquiries that reflect the overall forward-leaning posture of the organization. The role also is the chief spokesperson for the Gulf Coast Restoration Organization.

Key accountabilities

The Media Relations Manager:

• develops, manages and updates as necessary the GCR (Gulf Coast Restoration) media relations strategy and ensures that it is fully integrated with other communication and external relations plans and activities;
• serves as the primary media contact and GCR chief spokesperson;
• manages and supervises all Houston-based and state-based field staff who interact directly with the media;
• develops message guidance;
• oversees the development of press releases, talking points, issue papers and other materials intended for distribution to the media or general public consistent with that message guidance;
• maintains relations with policy and technical experts throughout the BP organization;
• facilitates interviews and other activities necessary to respond to media inquiries, including all pre- and post-activity follow-up and logistics as necessary;
• ensures that all materials intended for public release are fully reviewed and approved by the appropriate officials before release to the media or general public;
• maintains consistent two-way communications between HQ and state communication operations to ensure broad situational awareness, close coordination and message consistency;
• manages the process of monitoring breaking news and providing a rapid response as necessary;
• provides daily updates on the status and nature of media inquires, including breaking news, trends, anticipated stories, etc., to all communication and external relations international organizations;
• provides suggestions to the VP, Communications and External Affairs and the Issues Management Director for proactive media activities;
• supports the Issues Management Director in the execution of proactive communication plans;
• ensures that the VP, Communications and External Affairs is immediately notified of all inquiries from The New York Times, The Washington Post, as well as inquiries from other national media outlets that could potentially, when reported, drive news nationally; and
• maintains media contact and distribution lists, and is responsible for the distribution of all BP media products.

Essential criteria & qualifications

- Bachelor's Degree from an accredited institution
- Minimum of 5 years prior experience with media and/or press relations

Desirable criteria & qualifications

- 10+ years in communications
significant experience with the national media (television and print)
- experience in politics and or crisis
- experience managing a geographically diverse staff
- sense of urgency and resilience
- ability to proactively reach out and influence
- strong communication skills
- team player and can align to disciplined messaging
- Previous experience directing others preferred
