Values – the Necessary Illusions

When the idea of using values in organisations was introduced in Denmark in the late 1980s, the aim was normative and idealistic. Values were something which an organisation not only could but ought to employ in order to become better in all meanings of the term – better at honouring its purposes, better at motivating employ-ees, customers and users, and better at creating profits. Values were viewed as a tool which could be used to continuously encourage the organisation to minimise the difference between the demands of the values and the organisational reality.
