This masters thesis explores how the potential of social software and communities of practice can be used when creating a viable online community. The subjects social software and communities of practice is analysed in order to learn which mechanisms in the two that can be useful when creating an online community. Furthermore business models and business plans will be explored in order to discuss how the strategy for the online community should be carried out. The findings show that social software and communites of practice bear a great resemblance to key elements of the design process of an online community, and therefor they are meaningsful tools to take into consideration when building an online community.
